Harry Clarke is one of my favourite artists - one of the very few that I collect (very lazily; I have two ink drawings and some pencil sketches by him).
None are as scarylovely as this.
Yay! Masque of the Red Death! I’ve always been torn between taking this story home to cuddle it and telling it to calm down, it’s scaring me. Either way, EAP knows how to get his creep on.

OMFG OUT OF CONTEXT. YOU HAVE TO READ TEH WHOLE BIBUL. IT WAS THE CULTURE OF THE TIME. HJKHLDFJKGHLDKJG
I love how Christians suddenly become wishy-washy liberals when these parts of the Bible come up.
Yeah and then they claim that we should base our morality on the Bible and ask where atheists get our morality from.
My question is if morality comes from god and the Bible is how he communicated that morality to us, what moral principles are we mere mortals supposed to use to determine which parts of the Bible to ignore?
Slavery is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. In fact the Bible is totally cool with slavery.
Misogyny is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. In fact the Bible is totally cool with mysogyny.
Genocide is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. In fact god ordered numerous horrific genocides.
Human sacrifice is bad because it’s bad, not because the Bible says it’s bad. Ever read the story of Jephthah? (Judges 11:31-39)
etc…
Reblogging this for the guy I work with who started trying to claim the Koran was a terrible text full of hate and murder. He looked so confused when I told him his mix of fibers(clothes) meant he should be stoned.
If God was real he would be a horrendous arsehole.
I found this necessary to reblog, not so much because of the content of the quotes, all of which I’ve seen before, but because of the comment “I love how Christians suddenly become wishy-washy liberals when these parts of the Bible come up.” This sentence needs some unpacking, to my mind.
Firstly and most importantly, if what you mean by ‘liberal’ is someone who supports human rights and equality for EVERYONE (yes, I mean everyone), then Christians ought to be that already. If they are not, they have not read the whole book (or they have, and chose not to pay attention). So the Qu’ran bashing that is quoted later is totally out.
Secondly, I’d like to take issue with the term “wishy-washy”. I think it’s a fairly univalenced term but, just in case, I’m taking it to mean someone who doesn’t stand up for their principles, or who isn’t prepared to back something they believe in. Prepare yourselves. As many can attest, I am not wishy washy in the slightest, and here’s what I think about your quotes:
Yes. They are in there. All of them. They are nasty, you’re right. But throwing them out on the table doesn’t prove that God doesn’t exist. It just proves that a lot of people are assholes. If, by trotting out Old Testament scriptures, one is trying to prove that nasty gay/abortion/prettymuchanythingtheydon’tlike bashing Christians are total idiots, all I have to say to you is: You had to go this far back in scripture to figure that out?
I won’t bother going into a long history lesson about each of these particular passages (though I’m sure many of you would benefit from the edification that would provide) because I don’t think it’s necessary. If you’re angry at crazy conservative Christians (which I’m assuming you are, who isn’t), then this is all you need to have in your aresenal:
“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, love one another.” (John 13:34).
What the crazy people don’t get is that Christianity is not about following the old testament to the letter. Even those who follow Judaism don’t do that, and it’s originally their scripture! Christ (whether you believe or not) gave a new commandment. LOVE ONE ANOTHER. And that, if we are inclined to simplify thousands of years of theological tradition (and it appears we must), is what it all boils down to. The rest of it is just quibbly nonsense that isn’t worth fighting about, not for either side. It just isn’t.
So, for those that are annoyed by “wishy-washy liberal” Christians, here is what I have to say. Your quotes do not bother me. I know they’re there. I’ve already read most of them, plus several more that you probably have not.
I am not bothered because I don’t trot out random bits of scripture as evidence for treating other people like shit. I am not bothered because I have read into, researched, and understand my own tradition. I am not bothered because I have made an informed decision. And, mostly, I am not bothered because I know who you’re addressing these quotes to, and I am ashamed that they dare live their lives under the name of “Christian”.
I consider myself liberally minded, I have never in my life been mistaken for “wishy-washy”, and I AM a Christian.
NOTE: Anyone wishing for even a short history lesson on the background of the Old Testament needs only ask, I am more than willing to edify:)
